Pallet Storage Cost Per Month in Los Angeles: What to Expect

← Back to the Blog

If you are an importer or ecommerce brand pricing out pallet storage in Los Angeles, the monthly rate is only part of the bill. This guide shows typical price ranges from published industry guides, what a storage rate should include, and how to compare quotes line by line.

Typical pallet storage cost per month

Published industry guides put standard ambient pallet storage at roughly $15 to $40 per pallet per month in the United States, with most providers near the middle of that range. California tends to run above the national average, and Los Angeles-area listings for standard pallets commonly fall between the mid-teens and the mid-twenties. Large, long-term volumes can price lower. Small or short-term accounts can price higher.

Treat these as ballpark figures, not quotes. Rates change with the market, and every provider builds its rate card differently.

What drives the price

Factor How it moves the rate
Volume More pallets and a longer commitment usually mean a lower rate per pallet.
Pallet size and height Oversized or tall pallets can take extra space and cost more.
Stackable or not Pallets that cannot be stacked use more space, so they often cost more.
Term and minimums Month-to-month storage costs more than a contract. Many providers set a minimum number of pallets or a minimum monthly charge.
Location Space close to the ports and the Los Angeles market is in demand, and that shows up in rates.
Turnover Pallets that move in and out often create more handling work than pallets that sit.

What a storage rate should include

A storage rate is not the same as an all-in price. Most 3PLs split the cost into several parts. Ask which of these are in the quote and which are extra:

  • Receiving (inbound handling): unloading, counting and checking in each pallet. Guides commonly show about $5 to $15 per pallet.
  • Storage: the monthly charge to hold each pallet.
  • Outbound handling: pulling and loading a pallet or case order for shipping.
  • Pick and pack: if you also ship single orders from the pallets.
  • Account and system fees: setup, a monthly minimum, or software integration fees.
  • Special services: relabeling, shrink wrap, pallet swaps, photos or inspections.

Two quotes with the same storage price can differ by hundreds of dollars a month once receiving and outbound fees are added.

Why Los Angeles can cost more

Southern California is the main gateway for Asian imports. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach bring in a large share of the containers that reach the U.S., so demand for warehouse space nearby stays high. You pay for that location. In return, containers have a short trip from the terminal, which can help with demurrage and per diem exposure and gets inventory ready to ship sooner.

If you import through the ports, see our guide to choosing a 3PL near the Port of Long Beach for how that trade-off works.

How to compare pallet storage quotes

  1. Give every provider the same facts. Share pallet count, pallet dimensions and weight, how many pallets arrive each month, and how many leave.
  2. Ask for the full rate card. Get receiving, storage, outbound, minimums and setup fees in writing.
  3. Check how storage is billed. Some providers bill each pallet from the day it arrives. Others bill on a set date each month or use a split-month method. This can change your bill.
  4. Ask about minimums and terms. Find out what happens if your inventory drops below the minimum.
  5. Model a real month. Add up receiving, storage and outbound for one typical month, then divide by pallets stored. That gives you a true cost per pallet.
  6. Ask about reporting. You should be able to see pallets in and out and inventory on hand so you can check your invoice.

A simple way to estimate your monthly cost

Use this formula with the numbers from each quote:

Monthly cost = (pallets stored × storage rate) + (pallets received × receiving fee) + (pallets shipped × outbound fee) + monthly minimums and account fees

For example, 100 pallets stored, 40 pallets received and 40 shipped in a month means 100 storage charges, 40 receiving charges and 40 outbound charges. Plug in each provider’s rates and compare the totals, not the headline price.

Ways to keep pallet storage costs down

  • Build pallets to a consistent height and footprint so they store efficiently.
  • Label and document pallets before they arrive, so receiving is fast and accurate.
  • Review slow-moving stock each quarter and ship or sell what has been sitting.
  • Plan inbound shipments in full pallets where you can, rather than many small partial ones.
  • Match storage length to your sales cycle, and use overflow space only when you need it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does pallet storage cost per month in Los Angeles?

Published guides show standard ambient pallets in the Los Angeles area commonly running from the mid-teens to the mid-twenties in dollars per pallet per month. Volume, term and pallet type change the number, and receiving and outbound fees are usually extra.

Is pallet storage priced per pallet or per square foot?

Most 3PLs price by the pallet position. Some larger or dedicated-space deals are priced per square foot. Per-pallet pricing is easier to compare across providers.

Are there extra fees beyond the monthly storage rate?

Usually yes. Common extras are receiving, outbound handling, setup, monthly minimums and special services like relabeling. Ask for them all in writing.

Can I rent pallet storage for just a few months?

Many providers offer short-term storage, often at a higher rate than a long-term contract. Ask about minimum terms before you ship.
